Sensory Processing is the foundation for all higher learning: reflex integration, gross and fine motor skills (hitting developmental milestones), mental health, social emotional cognition, and academics. By using a bottom up approach and supporting smooth sensory processing, we can maximize the quality of life of children. All children benefit from smooth sensory processing "neuro - highways."
Early Intervention
I LOVE early intervention. My dream for the world is that every pediatrician's office and preschool could have an OT on staff to prevent and problem solve concerns that go overlooked and "catch" all the children that fall through the cracks at this age. Small tweaks and changes go a LONG way for young children.
Environment Matters
Finding ways for children to participate in their natural environment (home, school, park, sports team, swim lesson) is invaluable. While I support your child to make internal changes, we can also work together to analyze their environments and make accommodations and modifications which foster peace, engagement, and independence.
Caregiver's Knowledge = Best Outcomes
A parent's deep understanding of their child is always the most important piece to the puzzle. Having an OT as a support system is fantastic, but nothing will impact your child's life more than your understanding of their "why." Why do they stare at the park before jumping in and playing? Why do they have a meltdown when putting on their socks? Why is my child always the "bull in the china shop"? Why can they not participate in baseball? Why does my child look scared after they roll over? One of my core beliefs is that all children are good inside and want to please others. Once we understand their patterns and processes, we can support them 24/7, not just one time a week during therapy.
Meaningful Play
OT is fun and looks like meaningful play! It is not reps; it is not boring. Sometimes we do hard things, but we can be brave and scared at the same time. This is my mantra with your children and my approach with treatment.
The "Snow Ball" Effect
The goal is NOT for any child to be in therapy forever. My goal for all children is to gain useful skills, tools for their personal toolbox, and confidence— then apply them in daily life. The more the child is able to complete this process, the more encouraged and motivated they are to take on the next challenge. I am always in the background cheering you on and always here if you need a boost!
